Ants

People don't pay attention to each other much,
especially during the busier times of day
(nice trench coats, a sea of black)
when the business people go
do
business.

Their heads are bowed down on the subway,
on the commuter trains--
they're catching precious sleeping moments,
listening to headphones,
reading newspapers or the latest bestsellers--
never paying attention to one another,
never noticing the comedic appearance
of so many people doing exactly the same things
side by side--
only a few of us really get it,
our eyes catch--
a small smile exchanged,
we scan opposite directions
absorbing the absurd world around us.
